Ice cream flavors

Posted on February 17, 2003 Written by Diane

Sophia informs me: “My favorite ice cream flavors are chocolate and Tweety.”

Took me a little while to remember that the ice cream truck at the park sells “Tweety” ice creams.

I had Superman ice cream as a child every summer in MI. I live in Orlando, FL now and hadn’t had it in years. Recently, I went to St. Augustine for the day and walked into an ice cream parlor and found Superman ice cream! I freaked out and told my husband all about this wonderful flavor. The gal working there said they were a MI based company. Anywho, if you live in FL, you can find it in St. Augustine, where all of the cute little shops are, along that main drag, near the fort.
    Hope this helps.

I am also curious about the Chicago Brick flavor formula. Unfortunately, I am recalling that in addition to the vanilla & orange sherbet layers, the “third” flavor was root beer…not caramel or maple. Can anyone else confirm this?

I used to work at Handel’s in Carmel and Fishers Indiana and they do have Blue Moon. Just go to Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream in Indiana and you will see on the home page what the flavors are. They are great people there and if you are ever in Fishers or Carmel Indiana, stop in at one of the stores and get some great ice cream. It’s the best I’ve ever had!

I’m in NYC and was trying to track down some Superman. After walking in and out of several ice cream parlors I decided to be more strategic in my search. I walked into a comic book store figuring that if anybody would know where in the city to find anything related to Superman it would be them. No luck. Even the ubergeeks had no idea; although it did totally blow their minds.

Too funny . . .I’ve been searching for a Vernor’s ice cream recipe and ran across this fantastic discussion! My memories (I’m 38): Going to a strip-mall type Sanders parlour for ice cream (2 scoops – Blue Moon and Bubblegum). I have no idea if Sanders actually produced it, or if they bought it from elsewhere (Mooney’s?). Sanders did make some basic flavors though, including Vernor’s and the best chocolate chip ever. I am lucky to still live in SE Michigan and can get Blue Moon anytime, but it doesn’t seem the same as I remember . . . I know I never had one with pineapple bits – that would have turned me right off as a kid (maybe the canned pineapple juice flavored it???). I am still actively looking for a Vernor’s Ice Cream recipe – I know it is no longer made.

Stroh’s Lemon Custard ice cream seems to have disappeared from the shelves here SE Michigan. I suspect it has to do with the closing of the plant in Detroit. Does anyone know if it is still available? First the orange pineapple, now the lemon.

Thanks Fred, and all others who responded. I actually found Chicago Brick Ice cream at Woodmans Grocery store in Northern illinois. The Chicago brick ice cream I found was vanilla orange and caramel, that is how I remember it as well. The caramel flavor does taste a little like maple though.

My favorite ice cream flavor is Crazy Vanilla. My dad used to buy it at this little store in Montpelier, VA, but it has long since been replace by another store and they no longer sell ice cream. I heard that Hershey makes it, but I am not sure. It is bright pink, blue and yellow and very delicious. I feel a little plain asking about this flavor, but I have never been fortunate to try Blue Moon(though I really want to now). If anyone knows anything about Crazy Vanilla, please let me know! I would like to get it online, it seems VA does not have it!

    Hey all,

Happy Holidays. Blue Moon ice cream is found at many of our stores (Made by House of Flavors – Michigan), and if it isn’t at your local shop, you can request it, and the store owner should look into carrying it.

We carry most of the others mentioned here as well – except Baskin Robbins black licorice – yeck!

We are a cooperative (not a franchise) and we were formed 8 year ago, when a handful of Baskin Robbins franchisees decided they could do something better.

e-mail me if you want more info on flavors. I might be able to help.

    Regarding: Blue Moon Ice Cream
Blue Moon: Dairies in Wisconsin and Michigan use a fruity flavoring produced by Chicago’s Edgar A. Weber & Co.

The commercial flavoring is listed as natural flavor and comes in liquid form.

If you want to know what Blue Moon tastes like, have a bowl of Fruity Pebbles, now the remaining colored sugary milk tastes almost exactly like Blue Moon. If you were really obsessed and have an ice cream maker, take a box of fruity pebbles, pour in whatever milk/cream you want to make the ice cream and let the flavors extract…skim off the ceral and make the ice cream with it.

By the way, lived in MI all my life and have had Blue Moon too many times to count and have never had pineapple in it.

For those of you on the east coast, you can find bot Blue Moon and Superman at Kilwins Ice Cream and Chocolate Shoppe. They are expanding all over the easter seaboard and it is the same recipe sold at Stroh’s and other Detroit dairies. I grew up in Detroit and I am so happy to have it near. They are all over FL and have locations in each state up the east coast. Happy Eating!!

I used to get extra quarts of blue moon ice cream in New Albany, Ohio when Cally Kardules had the Dairy Cream. They are both gone now, but I think I have recreated a home recipe that is extremely similar. It is not the pineapple version, which I have never had. I use a 2 quart Quisinart ice cream freezer. Recipe as follows:
4 Cups whole milk (you can use all skim or any other blend of milks including some half and half so long as it equals 4 cups), 1 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoon almond extract, 1/4 teaspoon of orange extract, blue food coloring as needed. That’s it.. So simple, but very delicious…..

    Hey there 🙂
Not sure what this is but just stumbled upon it and assumed that it was some kind of forum for people looking for certain types of ice cream. Am I right? Well, I should have probably bothered to find that out myself before stupidly posting. Anyway, was just wondering if anyone could help me out with this: it’s about those Flinstones Push-Up Pops or whatever they’re called used to come in vanilla and strawberry or something I believe. Anyway, I don’t even care what flavour I get my hands on at this point because it would serve as such a fun little reminder of good times, and I’d just love to find some. It’s been over ten years and a friend just got me thinking about it again. Does anyone know if they sell it in Canada, particularly in Ontario, or even New York (Buffalo/Niagara Falls area) ?

Everybody’s talking about Vernors-flavored ice cream, but what about the Vernors ice cream BARS? It was regular Vanilla ice cream, but instead of a chocolate coating, they were dipped in a coating made with Vernors Syrup.

Katie…I’m in Kansas and have been buying Superman Ice Cream at Wal-Mart for weeks now. I would never have purchased something THAT color for myself but my husband accidently bought it thinking it was sherbert and MAN is it GOOOOD!!! lol

I was just searching for the exact flavors because I’m dying to know. I would have bet the yellow was banana. I guess my eyes are tricking my taste buds!

For those in Scottsdale, AZ… did anyone ever go to Auntie Em’s for Blue Moon? I tried to call their number (8/31/08) and the number is no longer in service.

I’m desperate to know if they are still in business, and if so, do they still carry Blue Moon?

I’ve gone as far as to ask my local grocer (Fry’s, who by the way, does carry Superman ice cream) to special order Blue Moon for me. Fingers crossed! Grew up in Iron Mountain, MI and had more Blue Moon than I could stand… feast or famine!! Please, places outside the upper Midwest, PLEASE carry BLUE MOON ice cream!!

For those of you that don’t know about Blue Moon ice cream let me explain. It is the best flavor of ice cream you will ever have. That is why so many people are hooked on it and spend countless hours trying to find it. I live in Pittsburgh now but grew up in Michigan. I didn’t relaize what a treat it was until I moved away. I know seek it out on every trip I make to Michigan. My most recent score was at The Malt Shop in Chesaning, Michigan, believe it or not they had it in both hard and softserve.

FYI, Mooney’s is the makers of the original and best Blue Moon ice cream.

HI, I’m serving ice cream sundae cups to kids at a party this weekend. I would think it’s a good idea to soften them a little for easier eating…but I don’t want to over-do it. Anyone have an idea about how far ahead I should move them to the refrigerator from the freezer? A couple of hours? Several hours? Any ideas would be appreciated.

regarding Chicago Brick ice cream – in case anyone is still reading this thread – my Dad was born in Chicago in 1916, and LOVES Chicago Brick ice cream. You used to be able to get it at Colonial Ice Cream Parlors around the Chicago area (St. Charles in particular), but I live in MN now and don’t know if any Colonial stores are still open. As far as my Dad is concerned, the flavors were always vanilla, orange and caramel. I am going to give it a shot to make some home made this weekend for Father’s Day – we’ll see how it goes!
