Blue Moon ice cream

Posted on July 3, 2003 Written by Diane

Okay, I have been extremely baffled by the continuous popularity of this entry’s comment thread.

What the hell is Blue Moon ice cream? I had never heard of it before this thread.

Who makes said ice cream, and where—for the love of pete—do you get it?

the golf coarse in sarsota is evies golf. its a mini golf but the best blue moon in Sota is kilwins on St. Armonds. So creamny without chunks of any fruit in it. after reading all of these posts im unsure if kilwin’s blue moon tastes anything like the ice creams of the northeast. Has anyone tried both to tell me how they compare.

I used to get Blue Moon ice cream at the Park Dairy (later House of Flavors) in Ludington MI when we would visit my grandfather on Hamlin Lake. My mom always claimed that the secret ingredient was something called “nesslerod” (sp?).

Tonight I was at Peterson’s Ice Cream in Oak Park IL and they had it! I lived in Oak Park for 11 years (1985 – 1996) and never saw this flavor at Peterson’s before. I was absolutely delighted, although it did not test quite the way I remembered it – the waitress thought it was somewhat “minty” and gave me a sample so I could test it before ordering. But it was close enough – it brought back memories.

I overheard an fellow employee talking about this ice cream that’s really good, he said it’s really hard to find in Michigan. I was at MEIJERS IN ROYAL OAK,MI.
Long behold I saw a group of kids ordering blue moon, I said, If kids are buying blue moon and my co-worker spoke so highly of this ice cream, I decided to order a scoop, I noticed it was almost gone, i ordered a scoop and ate it while I was grocery shopping, I ate the one scoop while I was shopping, so I decided to order a scoop to go.

If you really ENJOY blue moon ice cream, MEIJERS DOES CARRIER THE FLAVOR.But at times they run out of it quite often.

Blue moon is a flavor you can’t decribe, the only decription I have is good to my taste buds.Hope this information was helpful.

    Thank you

My mom and dad grew up in michigan/indiana (mishiana)
then the airforce trannsferd them to California. I was born here but every other summer we go back to visit family. Every time we go i can’t wait to get the famous blue moon ice cream. My cousins look at me like i’m crazy cause they can get it any day of the week. I tell all my friends in california about it and the first questoin they ask is “what dose it taste like?” all can say is “it’s just good.” My family and i in the mid west try to explain what it tatse like and some say its almost like a root beer float mixed with some fruit and of course the rich blue color. I just can’t pin point it!! I love this ice cream but i can say that its no where to be found here in california.

You can find Blue Moon ice cream at Kilwin’s franchise stores. Log on to http://www.kilwins.com to see where to find stores in your state. This is a flavor that most stores carry but not all so you need to be sure to call first!

Kilwin’s Ice Cream is all original and is only served at Kilwin’s shoppes.

Kilwin’s Chocolates Fudge and Ice Cream. The finest Confectionary shop you will ever enjoy!

The ice cream in this place is FANTASTIC!!!!!

Blue Moon ice cream was invented by a factory/parlor called Sherman’s Ice Cream. It is in South Haven, Mi which is where I grew up. He also invented Moose Tracks, but the recipe got out and some one else pattened the name. So good luck finding the real recipe for Blue Moon! Sherman’s is open year round, and it is fabulous ice cream with huge servings. Check it out if you’re ever that way.

FYI for everyone with a Meijer nearby. Blue Moon can be ordered by the 3 gallon tub, yes, three gallons! Order from the cafe, it’s $24.99 and it took about a week to get to the store.

If you have any problems email Meijer from their website.

This is only kind of Blue Moon i’ve ever tasted, if anybody else tries it let me know if it is the ‘real’ Blue Moon.

Blue moon ice cream was my childhood favorite. I got at
City Dairy in Midland, MI. I moved to the south and never saw it again until I was in Gatlinburg, TN on vacation and had to get a cone. It’s still my favorite.
I would love to have a good recipe. I guess I’m not the
    only one.

I lived in Grosse Pointe, MI during my high school years, and we got Blue Moon ice cream at the Stroh’s Ice Cream shop there (have no idea if it was related to the beer company).
I loved Blue Moon ice cream, and to me the closest thing that described the flavor was that it tasted a little bit like Dr. Pepper. Of course, nobody knows what gives that drink it’s special flavor, so maybe they have some similar secret ingredient in common, who knows.
I would give anything to be able to taste that flavor again.

    Hi all,

Just had to comment on the “Blue Moon Ice Cream”. This ice cream has been around for probably on 45 years. My husband use to have it as kid in Lundington Michigan. If I am not mistaken it originated there at a place called Park Dairy – which no longer is around. I have never tasted it but he said it was good (he is a chocolate with strawberry topping fan) but his cousin absolutly loved it. I have been with him to Ludington (years ago) and never had it. Now my interest is peaked.

Obviously everyone here loves blue moon, but did everyone know that they make blue moon ice cream sandwiches – blue moon with a vanila cookie. I didn’t think that they could improve the ice cream until I tasted the sandwiches – WOW!!!

Q – where did this beautiful ice cream originate. No one seems to know for sure.

My quest for Blue Moon ice cream seems like an eternity! It was all I ever ordered at Baskin Robbins in Midland, MI when I was a kid. Eventually, they discontinued it, which was extremely disappointing. I was still very young, but forced to carry on with life. So, onward I drifted, through living in Florida and now Colorado with no Blue Moon to be found. I guess I finally figured it was taken off the market, but never failed to look for it in every ice cream shop I entered. It’s a habit that will never die! Now, I find this website which is truly amazing! I thought Blue Moon was gone forever and that I was one of the only people who had ever heard of it! I found that I can order some of my very own! I see there are different kinds, and I’m very partial to the one I know. Which, seems to be the case with everyone. Mine is from late 70’s, early 80’s and I’m thinking maybe an eggnog/Fruity Pebbles combo sounds good, but I’m not quite sure…..and no chunks of ANYTHING allowed!!!

Blue Moon _can_ be found! I jinx it–every time I’ve ever found a store in or around Chicago that carries it, the ice cream shop closes the next time I go there. But Woodman’s (grocery store) has carried it for a couple of years. I haven’t been able to jinx them. And Sherman’s ice cream in Michigan makes Blue Moon too so it’s available in a number of shops up there. Keep looking! This is my favorite flavor too and no one has ever heard of it except the Michigan people who can get it regularly.

Some Meijer stores in Michigan carry Blue Moon – the real deal, just like at the old Stroh’s Ice CReam Parlors. I have also found it at Meijer in Indiana. If you have a Meijer store maybe the manager can order some for you – they sell it at their ice cream counter, not in the freezer section.

For you licorice ice cream lovers. I am from South Florida and we used to eat an Icre Cream called Licorice Voodoo or Liquorice Voodoo. It was white with wonderful black swirls of gooeyness. Your tongue would turn a bluish color after eating. My mother in her 80’s still raves about it and I would like to find a way to get her some at this late stage in her life. Please help if you have heard of it or know anything at all maybe was a 21 or 33 flavors thing. Sort of tasted like the Callard & Bowsers licorice toffee – also discontinued.

Thanks in advance for any help – grimesk@ix.netcom.com

    Dear Beloved Blue Mooners,
I found this website awhile back. What a thrill it is to see so many of us. I grew up in Iron Mountain, Michigan and like the rest of you long for the luscious taste every single time I come home! Lucky for me I can still get it at the local grocery stores in the winter and in the summer they have it at all the ice cream shops.
This year I broke down and brought some home with me to Breckenridge, Co. I put it in the bottom of a big cooler and put a bunch of other frozen goodies from home on top of it. I sealed it with duct tape and sent it off with the luggage. To my surprise, it made it! Still frozen! So,… since nobody seems to have the recipe, this is my only solution. If anyone does have a recipe please submit it to the website. People will go crazy!!! Pamela Breckenridge, Co

Karin’s Sweet Shoppe in Hudson, OH makes it and will deliver. It has a little more of the burnt almond flavor and less of the 7Up-like flavor that Superior Dairy in Canton, OH’s had.

    http://www.karinssweetshoppe.com

Superior Dairy no longer makes the blue moon flavor. Smith’s Dairy in Orrville, OH does but it is onlyappears to be available for commercial orders.
