Okay, I have been extremely baffled by the continuous popularity of this entry’s comment thread.
What the hell is Blue Moon ice cream? I had never heard of it before this thread.
Who makes said ice cream, and where—for the love of pete—do you get it?
This is one source for a blue moon ice cream. I believe there are others that are possibly more local to California.
“Jay Blossom, owner of IceCreamSource.com, agrees, pointing to one of his top sellers, Blue Moon: a Froot Loops-flavored melange that is a favorite of Wisconsin natives. He says former residents of the state can’t seem to live without the bright blue pints, and many are willing to pony up $59.94 to have six pints shipped to places as faraway as California and Florida.”

Blue Moon ice cream is a very weird thing. It does smell just like Froot Loops, but it doesn’t really taste like them. The best versions are very creamy and rich, but taste “overflavored,” as if somebody dumped a whole lot of flavoring in of many types.
A friend theorizes that the taste of Blue Moon is actually the taste of concentrated blue food coloring! I hope not.

Ann Arbor opened a new chocolate shop that has blue moon ice cream.. I have no idea what the flavor is but enjoy it immensely. I wonder if finding out the flavor or how it is made would ruin the enjoyment factor….

okay look. i live in northern illinois and go to wisconsin often. there is a place in lake geneva that has it called annies ice cream parlor. its the real thing i promise. all the ones i found on recipezaar are NOT the real thing. the real thing doesnt have pineapple chunks in it! i spent all day looking for recipes and have had to come to grips with the fact that the real thing isn’t on the net, and some of it has alcohol added in it, making it not the real thing anymore because they wouldn’t have it in shops if it had liquor in it.

WOW! I have searched for anyone that knows anything about Blue Moon Ice Cream. I grew up on it in Michigan and have moved all over the country and only once found it……..in the 80’s, in Iowa. I bought a 5 gallon container thinking I would never see it again and I was right. The place that had it never made it again! I too have seen many imposters, including some kind of bubble gum thing and a blue raspberry wanna-be. Is this truly just an upper mid-west flavor? I would really like to know the “secret ingredients” and have it available throughout the country. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts have made it to the west coast, I think it’s time for “The Moon”!

I can remember blue moon ice cream from back in the 70’s when I was a young kid. I grew up in Central Indiana and we had it there. I did not have to go to Wisconsin to get it. Then in the 80’s this ice cream shop closed. A bunch of us at work got on the subject one day of Blue moon and how everyone loved it. It does have a funky taste but it is a good one. Then shortly after I got married in the early 90’s my husband and I stumbled on some more at a different ice cream shop in town. Sad thing was this place was only open seasonally and it was in a place you really did not want to be after night fell!!! This place eventually closed to, luckily it wasn’t until I gave birth to our first born. I could not have made it thru pregnancy with out bluemoon ice cream. Well we moved to Kentucky and on one of our visits back up north we were in a Mejiers (help me out on the spelling!!) and in the food court they had hand dipped ice cream and they had blue moon!!! So me, my husband, then 4 year old son, sister-in-law and nephews all indulged. Before we headed back to Ky the next day we all went back again!!!!! Well we don’t have a Mejiers anywhere really close but there is one about an hour and a half away and sure enough they have it too at their food court all the way here in Kentucky. So if you have a Meijers anywhere around you check it out!!! best way I can describe the taste from my taste buds point of view is that it is a little bit like a cotton candy flavor with some of a almond extract taste to it. It is a love hate thing. You either love it so much you will never forget about it or it just is not something you like at all. Seems like there is no in between.

Oh MY goodness…I have been looking for and trying to transport Blue Moom ever since I moved away from “home” in the mid 80’s! LOOOOOOOVE IT!!!!! But I can’t seem to be able to get it out of the state of MI. My first attempt was, of course, to drive a gallon from SW MI to NE VA, in a cooler, in the dead of winter, eating what was soft along the way, my last attempt was shipping on dry ice and I’ve tried everything in between with no complete success. I SO miss the “tastes like Blue” stuff!

I was born in Iron Mountain MI but moved to Milwaukee when I was 2. Every summer we went back to the UP for vacation ( my dad was an addicted fly fisherman). Every day we would go to the Summit Dairy in Kingsford to get our fix of Blue Moon. I have lived in PA since I was 8 and only got the icreadible blue stuff when we went on vacation back to MI, or in my travels for work. I have found it at most (but not all) Mejiers. (For example, the one in Marion OH did not have it, but the one on the east side of Columbus did. We have had several local ice cream shops in the Pittsburgh area that have been carrying it, but the supplier changed the “recipe” the last time around, filling it with some kind of chucks of hard candy and changing the color and flavor somewhat. A clear case of sacrilege if there ever was one! Found a version of it years ago that was more like a sherbert than ice cream…wouldn’t want it again.

I’m in Madison Wisconsin and I just had some Blue Moon ice cream made by Cedar Crest; visit them at http://www.cedarcresticecream.com . I first had Blue Moon at a place called the Chocolate Shoppe that was in Beloit WI, but it closed many years ago. Strangely enough I used to have a scoop of Blue Moon next to a scoop of Black Licorice ice cream. Sounds disgusting but I guarantee you will love it! Here is another strange but delicious taste combination. Eat chocolate ice cream and then a soda cracker at the same time. I don’t know why but it tastes great!!

Wow. I grew up in Milwaukee, WI, and have live in Madison for the past ten years. I’ve also spent a great deal of time in Northern Wisconsin. While it isn’t my favorite flavor, I have seen Blue Moon ice cream in all those places, in many different brands. It always tasted like Froot Loops to me. However, I had no idea that it was just a regional thing.

Ahhh! Blue Moon ice cream. It appears that everyone thinks it originated in Wisconsin.
I grew up in Somerset County Pennsylvania and remember Blue Moon ice cream as a child in the 50s.
It was bright blue and had cherries and nuts in it and it was a mingling of flavors that included pinapple and cherry and really is a mixed fruit flavor.
Had not seen it since then till 1978 in Columbus Ohio. At that time the Superior dairy out of Canton made it just for small ice cream shops and did not package it for sale in stores.
I was just back there and the ice cream shop that was there them is no longer.
However, the very best ice cream has to be teaberry! Far as I know, can be found only in Somerset County Pennsylvania. (Teaberries are from the wintergreen plant)
Comment by David — August 20, 2003 @ 3:33 pm
I don’t know if this was answered already. (I read through most of these posts and didn’t see it.) Blue Moon is colored blue, but the flavor is a mix of lemon and orange. I’m stunned to find so many fans of it! I used to dream about it when I was pregnant with my son. I live in Michigan and you can find it almost anywhere around here.
When I was a kid, it DID have pineapple in it, by the way. (1970’s) I was heartbroken when they stopped putting it in. Sometimes I’ll get a pineapple sundae using blue moon ice cream. Mmmmm…

Blue Moon is my all-time favorite!! In fact I am going to lunch and will be enjoying a large dip of Blue Moon from Maucky’s Ice Cream in Frankton, IN. I grew up in Anderson, IN and Bert T. Owens always carried it, then several years past until another small ice-cream shop in Anderson carried it. Then a few years ago, Maucky’s opened and to my joy, they carry it!! What does it taste like? Blue Moon! Who cares what’s in it, it tastes awesome! It makes a great shake as well!

I just got done eating a Blue Moon Ice Cream cone and happened upon this message board of blue moon while trying to find out what the hell they use for that one-of-a-kind flavor! I grew up on blue moon here in Milwaukee, WI buying it from all places, KMART!!! They always had bluemoon. Most don’t sell ice-cream anymore, but bluemoon at Kmart was like choc/vanilla. There have been wannabes with the added junk like pop rocks, etc, but nothing beats just the normal, smooth sky blue moon, sometimes with a gumball in the bottom. The Chocolate Factory now carries it, not sure if those are across the states or not. I’m going to do a little digging and see if I can find any more info. I’m reallu surprised to learn that Blue Moon is a mid-west thing (namely MI and WI) just like custard..GO LEON’S!!!!!

Blue Moon ice cream: Is a product of the Blue-Fly Cocktail of the 1950’s. The blue fly cocktail consisted of 1 ounce of Blue Curacau, 1 ounce of White Creme de Cacao, and heavy cream.
Whoever got the idea to freeze it made blue-moon ice cream. The cream turns a very pale green, or blue-moon color.
People will tell you that it has a fruit loop taste. Actually, Blue Curacao is made from fermented oranges, and as I understand it gets its blue coloring from the fermentation process. White Creme de Cacao is Chocolate flavored liquor, and when mixed with the Blue Curaco, and Cream takes on an orangey almond flavoring.
Nowadays there probably is no real blue moon ice cream anymore. Mostly companies add blue dye, and orange swirl, and even almond flavoring to make it up. Sometimes you will find it with pinapple pieces mixed in.
I make it at home for guests. Follow this recipe exactly.
1/2 gallon of premium vanilla ice cream (premium)
2 ounces of Blue Curacao
2 ounces of White Creme de Cacao
Do not add any more alcohol. If you do when you freeze it you will have Blue Moon Soup. It will not setup properly. Blend it in a blender with the ice cream just turning liquid, and then get in frosted glass, or frosted glass bowls fast, and into the freezer damn quick. The freezing has to setup fast or the alcohol will seperate.
Serve in the cold glass right out of the freezer.
It will be better than sex - trust me…..

Obviously the people from Michigan lack in reading comprehention skills… Try reading it again…. Orangy-Almond taste. I guess it could be described as burnt almond.. Depends where you get it nowadays.
If anyone has any other recipies on this I would appreciate it, or old time stories I spent six months researching this. I would like to add to my research. I know that Blue-Moon ice cream originated in the midwest, and the closest I can peg it down is western PA. But I have a hunch it is from Wisconsin, or upstate Michigan. Anything would be a help….

BLUE MOON!!! It has been fun reading all these post and seeing all the different ideas of what it taste like. I grew up in Raleigh, NC and after college moved to northern MI and found an ice cream parlor that makes homemade blue moon. I fell in love with it. Still have no idea what it taste like, but good. If you are ever in Baldwin MI in the summer you have to try some at Jones. I think it is better than any other kind I have ever tried (Sorry House of Flavors, yours is still real good). Jones closes down for the winter so this year I bought some Blue Moon and plan to let it last all winter. Guess I will have some today with lunch.

Blue moon ice cream is flavored with benzaldehyde, the flavoring ester found in almond extract; just try opening up a bottle of almond extract and smelling it. That’s what blue moon ice cream is like.

The only other place I have been able to find it, seeing as I’ve never been to Michigan, was a ice cream parlor in Key West, Florida right on the western docks by the place you board for the clipper ship tours.

I’m a serious Blue Moon fan,
but once I moved away from the Detroit area to Los Angeles, I’ve had to go cold turkey.
Whenever I do visit Detroit,
I usually indulge at least three times,
buying it at the local Meijers.
All I know is that it’s made by Stroh’s Ice Cream,
and is prohibitively expensive to ship to LA.
When people ask me what it tastes like,
all I can say is “blue vanilla” and leave them wondering.

Recently (last week) while looking at the ice creams at the grocery store, I found a gallon of blue ice cream. I looked at what it was called, and almost screamed in joy. It’s made by Scroeps which is based in Madison. I don’t know how far this brand spreads, but people in the Midwest, check your grocery store!!!

Okay…I am having a hard time finding “Blue Licorice” Ice Cream. Is it similar or the same as your Blue Moon stuff? I am wondering whatever happened to it…I am suffering from withdrawls up here in Canada! Would anyone be able to help me with this…even though the site says that nobody knows anything?! Take care and thanks a bunch!

nobody at college (in beloit, wisconsin) believed me when i said that there was an ice cream flavor called blue moon. they all looked at me like i was a complete idiot. i was with people from colorado, canada, arizona, california, and illinois. they even called my mom in michigan to ask if i was lying, and then accused her of lying! there is blue moon at treat street in kalamazoo, michigan and at a drug store in portage, michigan on portage ave (unfortunately i don’t remember what it’s called) and at meijers.

Do any of you ever feel like a private joke to some elite group of flavor chemists out there? I mean, imagine creating this amazing flavor and then driving the population crazy while they attempt to define it. It’s a sick cruel world. I cant wait for June when I will be visiting Milwaukee and reunited with my favorite, though mystifying, creamy blue ice cream.

I grew up in Wis. & now live in Jacksonville, Florida. Not a scoop of Blue Moon to be found here. My teen agers are Blue Moon addicts after having it on vacations to Wisconsin. Why isn’t it distributed everywhere?!!?

For those of you still looking for Blue Moon icecream, the maker is Melody Farms. Melody Farms owns Mooney’s icecream AND Stroh’s Icecream. Their web address is http://www.melodyfarms.com. I don’t know if you can order from them, but maybe if enough of ya’ll from Florida and California ban together, they will distribute to your state. Good Luck..I’m going to Meijer’s now..I’ve kinda got a craving for it myself!

I remember a Mr Burkel having a blue moon ice cream at his lunch counter in the 1950’s in Sandusky Ohio. I remember it being the only flavor he made of the ice creams he served. I am sure it was not made from fruit loops.

I now live in Texas, but grew up in South western Pennsylvania. In the 50’s my family went every Sunday to Long’s Dairy near Altoona and my favorite was Blue Moon. I had it in othe parts of Pennsylvania during that time span, but none compared to that made by Long’s dairy. Wish Long’s was still in business, I would pay them for the recipe.

Blue moon has been around for a long time, probably well before the 1950s. My uncle was a pharmacist during the depression in Holland, Michigan, and he used to reminisce about serving it at his soda fountain counter. He also made a dynamite strawberry ice cream soda even when he was in his 70s. My dad always described it as “like tutti frutti, but dyed blue.” Both agreed that it used to have bits of fruit, pineapple and cherries and peaches chopped up fine and mixed in. I have tasted the Schoep’s version (mentioned by several people here) and agree it is very good, but I have no idea whether it is anything like the original. The flavor of the Schoep’s blue moon is similar to that of an essential oil flavoring used by bakers. The bakers call it “fiori di Sicilia” (Sicilian flowers) and it combines almond, vanilla, and citrus. Added in tiny amounts to baked goods like coffee cake or sweet rolls, or to dairy products like ice cream or whipped cream, this oil-based flavoring agent creates an indescribable sensation that depends heavily on the nose rather than the taste buds for recognition. (I believe this explains the suggestion that blue moon is ‘fruit loops’ flavored, since similar aromatic agents are used in various breakfast cereals.) Personally, I detect no chocolate flavor in Schoep’s blue moon.
Blue Curacao is a liqueur, rather than a fermented beverage, and it is made up using orange oil and blue coloring. Certainly mixing Blue Curacao with a good quality vanilla would come close to the desired flavor if you got the proportions right, though I think a little almond extract would also be needed.
For the black licorice seekers: the ‘licorice’ flavor in ice cream and liqueurs is usually derived from anise seed. Try adding some Anisette liqueur, or perhaps Greek Ouzo or Metaxa, or even Galliano to a plain vanilla ice cream. I think you will get the flavor you seek. I don’t know what color ‘black licorice’ ice cream was, but the color was surely artificial, just as it is in licorice candy.

i have been eating blue moon since about the day i was born. i honestly can’t think of anything better. and yeah you have to wonder about what exactly its flavor is, but that just adds to it. you cant really pin it down. personally i always thought it tasted like blue sugary clouds, but thats just me.

But now we are in North Carolina because my husband is in the military and I can’t find it anywhere either, not even at Basken Robbins, where their suppose to have all of these flavors. I’m pregnant with my first child and I want some so bad.

I cannot believe the sheer numbers of blue moon aficionados I have stumbled across!! I’m truly floating to think I may be able to experience this treat once again…. I would always order-up Blue Moon cones when we summered in the 50’s and early sixties at Epworth Heights, near Ludington, MI.. Once in the late 70’s, I found it in an obscure ice cream shoppe in Columbia, MO. I wonder which distributor shipped this? Regardless, it was the very same ice cream I had savored as a kid, and I was in seventh heaven to taste it once again. Recently, I had a dream about that Columbia, MO. experience, it was so profound. That’s why I did this Google search tonight, and I’m in good company! The version I am familiar with is creamy, no chunks of any sort, and undefinable–just irrestistable. I plan to email some of these manufacturers… I am SO happy that I can taste this once again, even if it means traveling to a shop in WI. or MI. No problem!

We recently opened an Ice Cream Parlor in Delaware County, PA and we sell Hershey’s Ice Cream. They have Blue Moon and also “Superman” which is a combination of Blue Moon and two other flavors. It’s ironic that last night I was putting my Hershey order together and was contemplating getting Blue Moon (which I’d never heard of), then I found this thread today while looking for a cone source. If any of you live near me, I’d be happy to get you some

BLUE MOON ICE CREAMMmmmm!!! I grew up on the shores of St Joseph, Michigan and loved Blue Moon Ice Cream as a kid. I joined the USAF 19 years ago, and hardly anyone in all my travels has heard of blue moon ice cream! It is truly a unique taste experience…I am now working on the Stealth fighter in New Mexico, and from time to time I just CRAVE that Blue Moon taste! I need to take LEAVE time from the military, go home to see my MOM, and have BLUE MOON ice cream, just like all those years ago as a kid!!

I live in Southeast Wisconsin, 10 miles from Lake Geneva. Blue moon is very common in ice cream shops around here but hard to find in stores. My wife loves it to no end. I did find it once at a grocery store but it lacked flavor. I forget the brand. I do know that Cedar Crest Ice Cream makes it. I have found it in gas stations or convenience stores. Take a look. You may get lucky.

I remember Blue Moon ice cream from an ice cream parlor in Milford, Michigan, called Capes Ice Cream. They made their own ice cream and also shipped it to local stores. The Blue Moon ice cream I remember was a light blue color and had very small flecks of pineapple in it. I’m 43 now and I remember this from my very young (single-digit) years. Capes Ice Cream hasn’t been in business for at least a couple of decades but I have had Blue Moon from Stroh’s Ice Cream parlors, too. I sent Stroh’s an email from their website asking them to start distributing the Blue Moon ice cream in grocery stores. Maybe if enough people request it, they’ll get the point.

I love Blue Moon!!!! I’m from Michigan, Detroit area, and always had to have that at Stroh’s Ice Cream parlor, and also had it at the House of Flavors in Ludington with my grandma. I’ve moved to Florida, and the only thing I’ve found close is called “Smurf” ice cream, similar taste, same color but it has marshmellows in it. Also I’ve seen it at Meijers in Michigan, I always have to get it when I go back. This is like some people are with Superman Ice Cream, it was so good, and it brings back childhood memories, but I love Blue Moon!

Just happened upon this site accidentally, but now I’ve gotta go to House of Flavors here in Ludington and get some. I’ve got a really bad craving!! So if no one outside of the Midwest has heard of Blue Moon…do they have Superman out there too? Because doesn’t Superman have Blue Moon in it? I too, am a native Michigander, now living in Nashville, Tn., and the only people that know about Blue Moon ice cream are northern “transplants” now living in the south.
Need an ‘estimate’ on the amounts of ingredients to convert my vanilla to blue moon !!! Anybody got any ideas.
By the way, the person that wrote about Jones’ homemade ice cream is absolutely correct. The best Blue Moon is in Baldwin Michigan !!
I even called and spoke with one of the owners, and she said there is a “blue moon” flavoring ? Anybody know where to get it ?

I’d never heard of blue moon ice cream, but i’m really curious to taste it now! found this recipe on a recent search:
3 cups finely chopped pineapples
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup blue curacao, to taste
2 quarts good quality vanilla ice cream
1. In a large saucepan, combine fruit, sugar and curacao.
2. Bring to a boil over moderate heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
3. Simmer for approximately five minutes.
4. Strain into a bowl, reserving pineapple solids.
5. Temper ice cream in the refrigerator until slightly softened.
6. Add pineapple and stir to combine completely.
7. Return to freezer for two hours; stir again.
8. Freeze until completely firm.
9. Ice cream will keep approximately one week.

My wife tried to get some Blue Moon for my birthday a few years ago, and knowing that I grew up devouring it as a child in the 60’s in SW Michigan, she did some sluething. She found what she understood to be one of the original sources of Blue Moon in Michigan, and it was an ice cream company in Eau Claire, Michigan. You could probably do a little internet search and find it. Last time we were back visiting, we did find some Blue Moon in Petosky which sure tasted like the real thing.

I posted about this on another thread, but in the meantime, here is the information on the House of Flavors in Ludington, Michigan. As far as I know, this is where Blue Moon Ice Cream originated. They also had Superman Ice Cream, Dill Pickle Ice Cream, Bubble Gum Ice Cream, etc.
It’s such a great place! As kids, we’d get to go and have a Super Pig Dinner at the end of the summer.
Pig Dinner = 9 scoops of Ice Cream + toppings, all of your choice.

I loved Blue Moon ice cream. I first had it when visiting my grandparents in Middletown IN back in the 70’s. I’ve never been able to find it here on the east coast. When I ate it, it had pretty much just a vanilla flavor, but that blue color was really pretty to look at.

Haaaah! I thought this stuff was just a fixture of my childhood and long gone by now (early ’80’s). I, along with several posters to this thread, regularly used to go to Ludington, Michigan, where some family owned a summer place in the Epworth Heights subdivision. There was an ice cream stand somewhere on the premisis that sold this, and I loved it. I still remember the middle-blue color to it. I vaguely remember what it tasted like, but it was gooooood. I’m dying to go back to Ludington!

~Vanilla
~Almond
~Orange
~Nutmeg
~Custard
~Cherry
Origionally made with 3 ingrediants (2 of which are flavors) when mixed together it gains its 2 prominant flavors of almond and orange. Try it again if you do not find this accurate because it is the truth.

I love Blue Moon Ice Cream. I grew up in Mundelein, Illinois until I was in 4th grade. I used to walk to Buster’s Ice Cream store with my grandfather to have a Blue Moon Ice Cream cone. Buster was this elderly man who was so nice to the children and loved working at his ice cream shop. He used to put jelly beans at the bottom of the cones for the children. Children in Mundelein loved going to Busters especially for the Blue Moon ice cream. I now live in NJ and only have Blue Moon ice cream when I travel to the midwest. But I always think fondly of Buster whenever I tell people that Blue Moon ice cream is the best ice cream in the world.

I’ve been living in South Florida since 1979 and hadn’t had Blue Moon Ice Cream in all these years since moving from Michigan with my parents at age 10. 3 weeks ago I discovered Blue Moon Ice Cream was here in South Florida. It is being offered by an Ice Cream & Candy shop known as Kilwin’s. If you go to Kilwin’s website: http://www.kilwins.com you can find their locations and stop in to get it. Not all the locations carry it, as it isn’t their most popular flavor, but they said they can order you a 3 gallon container of it. I don’t know how much that will cost, because I’m lucky enough that the Coral Springs location in Broward County does carry it. But, I get a quart of it for $8.95. Oh it was so good to taste Blue Moon after all these years! Good Luck in your search for Blue Moon everyone!

BLUE MOON IS THE BEST!
I just received an ice cream maker for my birthday this week and as I was searching for recipes I came across this posting. My family and I used to drive up to Copper Harbor, MI (from the ‘burbs of Chi-town) and eat at a place called “The Last Frontier”. They had an old school ice cream parlor set-up and what did they always stock for us each August? Blue Moon conjures up memories of happiness, the intoxicating smell of the north woods, and fun with the family. Thank you for this site and postings!

I use to consume Blue Moon Ice cream back in the 60’s & 70’s in Oakland County,Mich. I now reside in California & no one has a clue when I mention this wonderful concoction. Was it a dream? The other dream was Black Licorice ice cream & I believe it was 21 Flavors right around Halloween,so it was only around for the fall season. The color was actually grey but it was awesome. I’ll be visiting Ontonogan, Mi. soon so I hope I can locate an ice cream parlor & get lucky!

Ok. Just picked up a 1/2 gallon of Blue Moon from Jones’ Ice Cream, written about in this thread. I’ve been eating Blue Moon Icecream from this incredible shop for over 30 years… they make their icecream right there in the back room, and it is the best. I’ve been to many of the icecream shops mentioned in Wisconsin, as well, and theirs tastes just about the same.
When I was about 14 I coaxed the recipe out of them, and had no idea that it was this big of a deal. As a family we just had an arguement about what the hell it tastes like, even did taste tests with other flavors we had in the freezer, because no one believed me when I told them what it was. It is so simple.
Go to Jones’, buy some, enjoy it, and keep on guessing!

Yeah, I just finished off the pint of Blue Moon we got from Kopp’s here in Milwaukee (a dear friend had given it to us as a housewarming present…)
Blue Moon was my favorite growing up in Delavan, WI and I remember it becoming very hard to find for a while. Apparently, you sorta have to look for it. One place that I know for sure will always have it is Ella’s Deli in Madison, which is a trip unto itself and if you really want a Blue Moon freakout, order their famous pound cake sundae with Blue Moon instead of vanilla!
Now, last summer I lived in San Bruno, CA, and while there was no Blue Moon to be found, I found another ice cream flavor out there that apparently isn’t available anywhere east of the Rockies… GREEN TEA! It’s sold under the Dreyer’s brand in CA, which is Edy’s in this part of the country, but I have never seen Green Tea ice cream since I left CA, and it is so good. Not overpoweringly sweet…really kinda subtle, and such a fetching shade of green…

My girlfriend just had Blue Moon ice cream delivered to my home in Los Angeles - after telling her how it was my favorite childhood flavor. On Sunday afternoons in 1969-73 the family would drive out to the country to visit “The Guernsey Cow ” in Exton Pennsylvania. This was a destination spot since it was the best homemade ice cream ever. The blue moon I just received was identical. What an incredible experience to taste something you haven’t had in 30 years. You can find it at Babcock Hall University of Wisconsin Madison 53706

Jones in Baldwin, MI is the best for Blue Moon. I am going there this weekend on a Harley road trip from Northern Virginia. Anyone out there know where it can be found in the N. VA/Wash, DC area??
I am Jonesin’ for some Blue Moon.

For Tim Hansen - You can find Green Tea ice cream at most Japanese restaurants as well as Ginger, Black Bean and even Lychee Nut flavors. I have also found it for sale in the frozen section of Trader Joe’s grocery stores.

Glad to see/hear I am not the only “Blue Moon” fanatic - it has been my favorite flavor far back as I can remember.
Fortunately I grew up in Madison WI - where for the most part it was plentiful….
Elle’s Deli, Babcock Hall, Schoeps, Chocolate Shoppe - Now even Blue Bunny at the super market sells it in 5qt containers (not the same quality but hey!)
Good luck on your blue moon quest - Jeff

The best BLUE MOON ice cream is at BRICKERS Ice Cream parlor in Hudson, OH. It is worth going to ohio for. Froot loops? Huh? It reminds me of the BLUE LEMON popsickles the ice cream man gives out. Except very dairy based. This is not a sherbert.

There is Blue Moon Ice Cream in Alliance Ohio. At Burger Hut. It is my favorite. I live in Virginia, but everytime I go to Ohio I get it. My husband makes fun of me because I always talk about going to Ohio just for the Blue Moon Ice Cream…

Oh My God! Blue moon is my favorite and I too am from Michigan. All of us Michigan people should get together. Last I heard from some of my sibs who are still in Michigan, I am in Colorado, is a place in Grosse Pointe has it. This must be a local flavor to that whole Great Lakes area, because they are the only places I have ever seen it. I was born in Ann Arbor and lived in Troy and Clawson and Brighton.

Seems we are all addicts of the blue moon flavored ice cream. I had my first taste of it in Milwauke Wisconsin 40 years ago. My husbands grandfather made the Blue Fly cocktail for many years. I think Tim T had it correct as to its origination. In any case the reason we probably all enjoy it is because of the multiple flavors it contains something for everyone!

I love blue moon ice cream. I am from Canton, Ohio when I first had my blue moon ice cream. I have been hooked on it ever since. It is the best ice cream I tasted. When I vist Canton, I always get me some blue moon ice cream. I live in Orlando, FL now and cannot seem to find it. I just ordered some on icecreamsource.com. It was very expensive but well worth it. I wish I could find a place that sells it here or close by.

OK, OK…here’s the scoop on Blue Moon ice cream: Stroh’s Brewery started making ice cream in 1919 as a way of making money during prohibition. Livonia, Michigan Melody Farms bought out Stohs in 1999, then acquired Mooneys, Nafziger and Sanders ice cream companies. The plant manager at Melody Farms is Gary Stemple and you can email him at: melodyfarms@melodyfarms.com

Hi everyone!
Heres the link to a company in Kalamazoo, Michigan.I purchased a few quarts of their BLUE MOON flavoring a few years back. (2 yrs. ago)
One bottle will last a long time you just need 1 1/2 TSP. for every 1 quart of ice cream. this is the real flavoring and tastes just like the ice cream parlor, in fact they sell to ice cream parlors all over Michigan and beyond.
Just get a recipe for ice cream like vanilla and add your blue moon flavoring. I have a cuisinart ice cream maker. It is great!
I use the flavoring even though they sell it at Pick n Save here in Wisconsin because I make a dairy free with coconut and rice milk for my lactose intolerant husband and it even turns out with dairy free recipes!
Everyone who is not in the midwest contact this company and tell them your interested in buying a few bottles of blue moon flavoring. I am sure they would sell you some and ship it to whatever state you live in. They did for me.
good luck fellow blue moon fans.

just got back from elkhart, indiana and a HUGE cone of blue moon ice cream. There is a little shop called the Curly Cone on the corner of Beardsley and Vine St. that does a shake and a soft serve blue moon cone. YUMMY! Grandma used to walk us down there when we were visiting and we used to get a cone every weekend. I also remember a little burger joint in Union, Michigan that my Grandma and Grandpa used to drive us to that had manequines dressed up in bathing suits outside. They had blue moon too, but were only opened in the summer! Great burgers too, but Grandpa says they closed down. All those still living near the moon relish it! Now i’m gonna check out a few of those websites and see if i can get some down here in new orleans!

I remember Blue Moon, and from what i do remember it was first made by Mooneys ice Cream here in good old Michigan and they have the original recipe, which you wont ever get. it was also believed it was vanilla ice cream with a tad bit of rasberry cream…but i wont argue with anyone about it, but i do know a retired mooneys production worker who told me this. unfortunately, he is no longer with us. but if you check with Mooneys, im sure they can confirm its origin and flavors. Mooneys makes the best ever Blue moon.

Being a former Yooper from Upper Michigan and now living in Chicago, I long for the days of eating Blue Moon ice cream wondering what in the world it tastes like. I think after 34 years, I may have the answer. I am between either cake batter or pistachio without the nuts?

I have never tried Blue Moon Icecream but after reading all this…I plan to. As for Blue Licorice Icecream…It comes in 4L tubs at Safeway now(so does tiger in 2L). Usually if you look you can find Licorice at the odd icecream shop…I live in Vancouver and I can think of a few places where I’ve been able to get it. Wish me luck on my quest to try Blue Moon!

Amy, you’re breaking our hearts and ripping the taste buds off our tongues with your comparison of Superman to the mighty Blue Moon. The words “Superman ice cream” have no right to belong on a page dedicated to Blue Moon ice cream - there is simply NO comparison!! Superman is bubble gum stuff … Blue Moon is mystery heaven!!

I’ve been Blue Mooning at Jones’ Homemade Ice Cream in Baldwin, MI for over 50 years! I remember Mr. and Mrs. Jones scooping out double dipped cones in the 50’s. The decor there hasn’t changed in all that time, except they don’t sell comic books any more. A trip to the country is not complete without a stop at Jones.’ I’ve also had this treat at House of Flavors in nearby Ludington, MI, but it tastes a little different. I was at Jones’ last weekend, and was told the flavor was almond/burnt almond, and that’s exactly how it tasted. At House of Flavors, they said it was nutmeg, and I could taste that, too. I vote for Jones’ because it’s dear to my heart. There is no citrus taste at all! No pineapple or orange or anything like that. I was delighted to see posts from other people who’ve experienced Jones’!

Real Blue Moon is the best!
I grew up in Whitewater, WI and remember getting Blue Moon at a small Ice Cream shop on Main St.
Every once in while I’ll see it at a shop and rarely is it what I remember. A guy at Baskin Robbins once tried to tell me that’s what he had and it was nasty bubblegum, yuk. I live in Milwaukee now and you can find a half gallon of it at almost any grocery store.

Sherer’s Ice Cream on North Main St. in Dayton across from Forest Park Plaza sells it by the cone or 1/2 gallon. Tastes just like I remember it as a kid at Shaver’s in Eaton OH.

WOW!When I was younger I first tried Blue Moon Ice cream and ever since I haven’t been able to get enough of it. The though is that I grew up in Ohio and I only knew of two places that sold it. So when I moved to California I was really dissapointed that they didn’t have my favorite ice cream!about six months ago I moved back to Ohio but Ice cream season is over and I don’t want to have to but a six gallon container of it (I would be facing the terrible repracusions afterwards) so i’m on a mission to find my ice cream… I tell everyone the true reason I came back was simply for the ice cream!

The only reason I ever go into Meijer is to get some Blue Moon ice cream made by Strohs. It doesn’t seem as popular down here in Cincinnati as it is in the Detroit area. Every time I go to Meijer here, the ice cream has carmelized and has a syrupy crust. I took a friend to Meijer to try some and he hated it. I wish the ice cream was more popular, we would find it in more places than just Meijer down here.

Well, I also grew up in Ludington MI and this is where I was always told Blue Moon Ice Cream originated. Right there at the House of Flavors. It IS the best Ice Cream in the world and if you ask the employees there they will say it is a nutmeg flavored ice cream, but oddly enough has no nutmeg in it. I look forward to my next trip home.

I grew up in MI and used to get blue moon ice cream at the city dairies. Miss it now that I live in CA. But I solved the problem by making my own after receiving an ice cream maker as a gift. Just use the recipe for vanilla ice cream, use 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of pure almond extract instead of vanilla, and add some blue food coloring.

Oh my gosh! I am not crazy! I can’t believe I found all of you — I have been on a quest for Blue Moon ice cream for about 10 years. They used to sell it at a little dairy called Ridgelea Dairy across from our school in Bucktown. PA. Unfortunately, they sold the dairy farm and there is now a new housing development where I used to get Blue Moon ice cream! The last time I had it, I begged the server to please tell me the ingredients and she had absolutely no idea. She even asked the manager and they said they had no clue. Why is it such a mystery?! Isn’t it amazing that you just can not place the flavor? We are talking here about a smooth ice cream with a very unusual shade of blue (NOT raspberry or blueberry) and an unusual taste that is light like vanilla but is not vanilla?!

Blue Moon ice cream came up tonight when I was at dinner with friends here in Minnesota. As always, when describing it the friends thought I was crazy, but my Californian husband was forced to eat some last year when we were up at the Schoenherr Stroh’s store so he could second me. My first taste of Blue Moon was when I used to vacation in Beulah, MI out near the sleeping bear dunes at a road side general store. I think there it was made by Mooney’s, but it tasted just the same as the Stroh’s which you could get in the Detroit area (makes sense as they are now part of the same company). It can really be only described as “Blue.” in flavor, though I think you can also say that it tastes like someone trying to replicate berry flavor with crude chemical knowledge. It is definately /not/ a sherbert, and I would turn up my nose at anything pretending to be Blue Moon which had pineapple or cherries or any other adulterations to it’s smooth, creamy chemical goodness.
Anyone who’s had the Stroh’s Blue Moon /and/ the small-creamery blue moon you can apparently get shipped from icecreamsource.com, is the flavor comparable at all?
Comment by Footnotegirl — February 1, 2005 @ 11:12 pm
My family loves Blue Moon; I’m from the east coast and had never heard of it until I moved to Michigan. Guernsey’s dairy in Northville and House of Flavors in Ludington are two of our favorites.
House of Flavors told us the flavor was “nutmeg” when we asked. But, I’m a gourmet cook and have a pretty well-tuned palate, and I’ve always said it was orange & almond. On the other hand, if you grate fresh nutmeg, you definitely get an orange-almond scent from it.
If I were to try to make it, I would use something orange flavored (the blue curacao seems to make sense) and some almond extract and a touch of vanilla (just a touch) and a grating or two of fresh nutmeg.
One way to experiment with the flavors is to take a quart of half and half
