new beginnings
my, my--what have we here?

Running news:
None today.

No, you're in the right place. Don't be afraid. Come in.

Yes, after two years of doing The Paperwork--which began on June 5, 1996--I've decided to change things a little. New look, new name.

Why?

I associate The Paperwork with going to USC. I got into online journals a few seconds after I got into the Web, and I started The Paperwork both as homage to my favorite diaries and because I knew I would need a way to keep in touch with all my friends when I was 400 miles away, in graduate school. So I started keeping an online journal, and I kept at it, all though the 2 years of getting my master's degree.

Which I have now gotten. I'm a civilian again. I'm starting a new endeavor: breaking into the film biz. New endeavors, new journals. It's a psychic house-cleaning, really.

Why nobody knows anything?

William Goldman, a very famous screenwriter, wrote a book entitled Adventures in the Screen Trade in which he has two very important rules:

  1. Nobody knows anything.
  2. Screenplays are structure.

I have to live with "Screenplays are structure" each and every day. I have to keep reminding myself that "Nobody knows anything." At least in Hollywood--one person's worst movie ever made is another person's Best Picture. My favorite actor may be your reason to stay home from the cinema. Nobody knows what movie is going to make money. Nobody.

And so, as I begin my swim through this new adventure, I start a new book. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if there are any broken links (I haven't quite decided yet what to do about linking up all the old Paperwork entries).
