The Backyardigans

Filed under: TV — Diane @ 7:50 pm

So, I know I’m totally going to give you the idea that all my kids do is watch TV, and this is completely one hundred percent not true.

However, the TV they do watch gives me something to write about, so here it is.

Forget Lazytown (as though I could forget it—it’s my single most popular entry ever)—Sophia got bored with Lazytown because it’s been the same five episodes in rotation for the past two months. The show to watch is The Backyardigans. How much do I love this show? I am tempted to watch it when the kids aren’t around. I sing the songs as I do the dishes. There are only nine episodes so far and I have all nine on our TiVo. I force people just visiting our house to watch some of this show.

I love this show.

backyardigans.jpg

Tyrone, Tasha, Pablo, Uniqua, and Austin

The Backyardigans is a show about five friends—Tyrone the moose, Tasha the hippo, Pablo the penguin, Uniqua the ladybug, and Austin the kangaroo (actually, I’m not sure what Austin is, and he’s the Backyardigan we see the least of anyhow)—who get together every day and have some theme to their play: ghosts, Tarzan, knights and quests, Mounties, Vikings. They all take roles in their adventure that pretty well fit with their personalities. At the end, they repair to one kid’s house for snacktime.

In between, there’s singing, dancing, and general silliness. What’s extremely excellent about this show is that there’s stuff in there for grownups that’s not sneaky or salacious: it’s just on a level most kids aren’t going to find funny in the same way. For example, three Backyardigans are chasing the Yeti across the North Pole:

             TASHA
          We need kayaks to cross
          this water.

They suddenly spy three KAYAKS on the bank of
     the river.

             TYRONE
          Well, that certainly is
          convenient.

That line cracks me up everytime.

The songs in this show are incredibly memorable. While doing the dishes I like to sing the songs the Vikings sing as their Viking ship rounds a very powerful whirlpool, “You’ve Got To Hold On Tight”:

You've got to hold on tight
Hold on tight
You’ve got to hold on tight
Hold on tight
You’ve got to hold on tight with all your Viking might.

Darin’s favorite bit is when they sing a limbo while trying to avoid the laser beams during a super-secret spy mission.

This show has reignited my love of musicals, which has been dormant for some time. (My insistence on musical-only writing music has been helped by the fact that I dug out our CD collection and ripped about 150 of them recently. Of course, I can’t find the one I’m looking for, Linie 1. Sigh.) I want to write a children’s musical, I’m so inspired by this show.

Anyhow: The Backyardigans is on Nick Jr. I highly recommend checking it out.

(Tyrone the moose is my favorite, by the way. In case you’re wondering.)

Update 2/16/05: Wow, lots of comments here! This entry is listed pretty high on Google when you search for “The Backyardigans” so I’m going to assume someone from Nick Jr. has found it. (Hi there! More Backyardigans episodes, please!)

A number of people have posted asking about Backyardigans-themed birthday supplies and other merchandise. As far as I’ve been able to find on the Web, there isn’t any! It might not be licensed yet or might not have gotten to stories yet. All I can say is: Hurry it up! You’ve got lots of customers waiting. If anyone does know of legit Backyardigans stuff, let me know and I’ll put it on this page.

I found a number of Backyardigans songs on LimeWire. I don’t know where they’re from, since a few things tell me they’re not recorded right off of the show. If the production company wanted to put out a CD with each and every song from the show on it, they’d have a bestseller. I think there are plenty of parents out there who wouldn’t mind putting that music on for their kids, and I’d rather pay royalties to the songmakers!

Evidently a new bunch of episodes will start airing in a week or two. I can’t wait…and I think the kids are excited too. All I can say is, keep ‘em coming! More! More!

Update 8/11/05: The Backyardigans’ eponymously named CD is now out! The Backyardigans has 19 great songs on it, although it doesn’t include my personal favorite, “You’ve got to hold on tight.” I had downloaded some of these songs from Limewire, but I’m much, much happier having the actual CD in my hot little hand now.

Update 1/28/06: Wow. This entry has 747 comments!

There are a couple of Backyardigan DVDs out now, which means you don’t have to keep every episode on your TiVo any more.

The Snow Fort: Contains “The Snow Fort”, “The Yeti”, “Knights Are Brave and Strong”, and “Secret Mission”.

It’s Great To Be A Ghost: Contains “It’s Great To Be A Ghost”, “Monster Detectives”, “Key to the Nile”, and “Pirate Adventure”.

Polka Palace Party: Contains “Polka Palace Party”, “Heart of the Jungle”, “Viking Voyage”, and one I haven’t seen before — having tea in the Gobi desert. (Maybe it hasn’t aired yet?)

  1. We love The Backyardigans too. I actually love it more than my son does, and he really loves it!

I have them all on TiVo too.

  2. Thanks for the pointer to this interesting show. I set it up on season pass for Tivo yesterday and it looks like they are running a marathon today (its taped 5 episodes this morning!).

The kids were glued to this show and kept asking to see more episodes this morning. The pirate episode was very well done.

    Thanks again for the pointers.

Oh and my boys didn’t like Lazytown at all. After 5 minutes, my oldest son Zachary said, “Daddy.. I don’t like this movie. Can you put on something else.” My youngest loves Dora and Blues clues which I still think are my favorites for them to watch.

    Comment by John Townsend — December 27, 2004 @ 11:38 am

  3. It also airs on CBS on Saturday mornings, along with most of the rest of the Nick Kids lineup (Blue’s Clues, Dora, etc.). Very nice for those of us who don’t have cable.

  4. I also love this show, probably more than my 14 month old. Although it does mesmerize her! Is there any place to find the lyrics to their songs? In particular, I’m looking for the song about the smelly lake. It’s hilarious and could come in handy :)

    Comment by B — December 27, 2004 @ 7:46 pm

  5. We love the Backyardigans too! We discovered the show in early November and have all the episodes on TiVo as well. (I wish new ones would come out soon). It’s funny how the songs stick in your head! My son (2 1/2) and daughter (11 months) watch it all the time! My daughter bounces up and down to the music…it’s so cute! My mother in law loves it too because of the signing and the choreography. It’s very entertaining for all! “I love being a Princess” and “A Pirate says Ugh” are so catchy!! I also love the lullaby to the memaid in the Pirate episode (hush, hush, hush little mermaid, goodnight).
This is a wonderful show that I would recommend to all moms and dads! Enjoy!

  6. We love the backyardigans, too! I especially loved the Mountie episode, because my husband is a Mountie. I was just sorry he was sleeping when it was on.

Quality children’s programming is so hard to find. I love this show because the characters are usuing their imaginations and humour to entertain. Have you ever seen “George Shrinks”? ANother great show, maybe only available up here in the far north.

  8. I love the Backyardigans beyond belief! Uniqua is my favorite. I have downloaded the songs and sing them to my boyfriend.

    Hope there’s a second season!!

    Comment by Tanya — December 29, 2004 @ 2:39 pm

  9. Glad to see I’m not the only one writing about the Backyardigans. Uniqua is my favorite. I gotta be honest, I didn’t realize she was a ladybug till you said so. I thought she was a little monster - but a good one.
You can actually download their songs - if you dare….

    Comment by Tangodiva — December 29, 2004 @ 7:29 pm

  10. Uniqua is my favorite. I gotta be honest, I didn’t realize she was a ladybug till you said so.

Well, Sophia said she was a ladybug, and that seemed right. But I see on TV Tome that “Uniqua is her name, and also her species – with her purple skin, pink spots, and dainty antennae, she doesn’t look like any other creature on the planet.” So maybe she’s not a ladybug.

You can actually download their songs - if you dare….

    Where? Where? Where?

    Comment by Diane — December 29, 2004 @ 9:58 pm

  11. First, for the person who wants the song lyrics, go to http://www.nickjr.com and on the Backyardigans page, they have downloadable song sheets.

As for downloading songs, I supposed I shouldn’t admit it, but you can download a bunch from Lime Wire. I have the theme and Secret Agent (which sounds like an Astor Piazzolla tango to me!). I believe A Pirate Says Arrggghh! is also there.

Now that you’ve got me thinking Uniqua is a ladybug, that’s what she’ll be to me - I just love her slightly stuffy-nosed speaking voice.

    Comment by Tanya — December 30, 2004 @ 11:18 am

  12. I can’t believe I’m not the only ! I too have all the episodes on TiVo, and I just sang the lullaby to my 13 month old from the Viking Voyage episode.

If I ever need to get anything done around the house, I can’t count on my son staying put during that show.

    Comment by tenb — December 30, 2004 @ 7:20 pm

  13. I have a 2 1/2 year old grandson who loves the Backyardigan’s, but not more than me and his Mom and his Nana.

I heard them before I saw them and told my wife that thee was a gret new kids show that sounded like a Broadway musical. When I saw those little rascals dance I just laughed and laughed.

Now to my point. Where are they? We have been searching our cable including all of the Nick channels for three days now with not a sign that they ever existed.

WE WANT OUR BACKYARDIGAN’S BACK!! AND WE WANT THEM BACK NOW !!

What happened? It doesn’t matter to us if they run the same episodes over and over until they create new ones. Each time we watch we learn more of a particular song or just hear a memorable little voice again (like Uniqua or any of them really) of hear “Hold on Tight”, etc. You get my drift~

We are in South Texas and have Time Warner cable.

    We want them back…….now!

  14. Okay, I too am relieved. I am 32 years old and I can’t get enough of them, especially Uniqua. I was at a hotal in New York and it came on and I realized that I actually like the characters and the songs. Most of all I absolutely love the choreography!!!! I have been hooked ever since. I am going to look for the songs out there, I will find them!! My husband thinks I’m crazy, but even he starts singing the songs long after the show is over.

  17. We also adore the Backyardigans. I especially like their theme song.

My son was just dancing with Tasha on a Nick Jr “commercial.” (He’s 19mos, so his dancing is a lot of fun to watch)

  18. Wow - great to see so many other people are watching the Backyardigans as well (with us parents).

My kids know all the episodes and songs - we’ve got them on TIVO as well of course.

  24. I think this show is wonderful! I’m nineteen years old and my little brother got me hooked! The viking adventure is my favorite. I love the lullaby the vikings sing to the mermaid so much that I’m hunting for the lyrics to it. I want to do a mermaid theme to my daughter’s room when I have one some day, and this lullaby would be so perfect to sing to her! Anyway, Woo-hoo for the Backyardigans!

  26. I am 19 (yes, pathetic I know) and I just wantched an episode of The Backyardigans with my 12 yeard old sister. I have never loved a show more than I love this one! I’m a performer of musical theater, and when I saw Tyrone doing pull-backs in his tap number in the Ghost episode, I was clapping and cheering. My sister and I watched the characters sing and spot their turns like pros, and we can’t wait to watch another episode. Hooray for people over the age of 7 who adore this show! Long Live The Backyardigans!!

I happened on it by chance while watching prime time in the day time and now I don’t even bother switching back to my TV we just watch her 1/2 hour. I also love how there are no commercials and lots of songs. My fav. is the viking episode with the lullaby song. I can’t get enough of these guys. FYI some enterprizing people are selling Backyardigans stuff on e-bay!

  29. What a fabulous show. I am really ready for some new episodes though. We also have them DVRd and it’s a staple on our television. Great music!!

My husband has also gotten on the Backyardigans kick. We do the opening dance and closing dance as a family with the TV characters. The repetition is helping my daughter with moves in her 2yr old dance class.

  30. I have three kids ages 6, 6 and 3 and they absolutely love the Backyardigans. My son loves to pretend that he is Tyrone. He know all of Tyrone’s lines and tells the rest of us who we can be depending on the episode. The show has all the kids up and dancing — they love to do the limbo! The music is wonderful and we all love the characters.

  31. Can I just say that I am addicted to the Backyardigans? We recently discovered tham at our house and we can’t say enough good things about a show that teaches kids to play in their backyards and make-pretend. The songs are SO sweet and the voices so memorable. I LOVE their songs! Oh ya, my daughters do too!!! Do they have any videos out???

I REALLY WISH THEY CAN TREAT THIS SHOW LIKE IT WAS SPONGEBOB OR SOMETHING. BY THE WAY MY FAVORITE IS UNIQUA. AUSTIN IS A KANGAROO.

He grabs his cowboy hats (one for me and one for him) and jumps on my back everytime it comes on and I sing, “ridin the range, ridin the range, ridin the range” and he does the “AH HOO” part. How hilarious!!!

  46. I discovered backyardigans while channel surfing a few weeks ago. and it was love at first sight! My girlfriend confessed to me that she had a favorite animal at the San Diego zoo when she was a little girl. It was a Hippo named Puddles. I have been teasing her and calling her Tasha. Today they had a promo for the show in which they showed the gang in an Egyptian location and I was all excited to see the episode, but when it came on, they went to the jungle to return a wormen to his family. But Tasha was not in the entire episode. WHY NOT! Is she on strike for more pay? Did she get killed along with Paul McCartney? Is Nick Jr. looking for a replacement? My girlfriend Vickie would be perfect. I am very disappointed in the production company for leaving Tasha out. I may have to write a song about what has happened to her. Of course if someone would send me a video of an episode or two I could be calmed down. Naturally Tasha must be present and I won’t accept a body double. My address is 3810 So. Redwood Road Apt# 2036 West Valley City, Utah 84119.

The only thing she’ll watch for any length of time is “Jeopardy” (don’t ask, I have no idea!). But she loves the Backyardigans, especially the theme song. Big, 4-tooth grin and lots of dancing.

    Great show!

I also record the show on TiVo and almost strangled my husband when he deleted a few episodes.

I’m 36 and wake up early Saturday mornings to watch it on cbs since I don’t have cable. Its the best show since Little Bill!

He gets into everything when I’m not looking, but when this show is on I know the house is safe from destruction! I am looking for some party plates and napkins and I can’t find them anywhere. Anybody else had any luck?

  70. AARRRR! My one year old son and I love the Backyardigans especially the Pirates episode.

I wondering why they sometimes leave Tasha and ofen Austin out of their fun? It’s probably just a bit cheaper to animate 4 character than 5.

Great musical fun for kids and grown ups with a sense of humor.

  80. I love the Backyardigans. I watch it all the time and I’m sixteen years old. Some things never change I guess.

Does anyone know where I can find lyrics to the song… it’s the one where they’re marching in the woods (and later they get into the lake with a large leaf and float away). The one episode where they sing “We’re Tarzans! We’re Tarzans!”, but not that song. The one after (or maybe before). Pablo after every verse sings something like …”going round in circles.” It’s the episode where they’re trying to find the worms home. HELP!

  81. My 2 year old no longer wants to watch The Wiggles, Blues Clues or Dora…it’s always The Backyardigans! We have all the episodes on TIVO and she asks to watch them all the time. She dances and sings along. Kudos to the writers of the show!

I like it when she sings “if your cold we’ll kiss your face” and when they are outside the fort thet has the world’s biggest snowball and they are all singing someones outside, someones inside. I love it. My husband loves the Pirate episode and Pablo is his favorite. We like the pirate song too, pirate toast and jelly -too funny. The baby cries when it goes to the break after the intro. We need more episodes.

    Ski Patrol to the rescue!

  99. My husband discovered the Backyardigans with our 1 yr old son this last November and we were instantly hooked. Thank goodness for Tivo, our little boy just loves the theme song as well as the other music. We find ourselves watching the show long after our little boy has lost interest. That has to be the best cartoon show on is a very long long time. Kudos to the creation team for providing parents of small children quality entertainment that doesn’t drive you crazy in the mean time.

  104. We just got turned on to the Backyardigans. My wife and I have found ourselves singing the songs as well. I have caught my wife watching the show without the kids and she is always endorsing that show over the other favorites, Dora and (occasionally) Barney. I was trying to determine what Austin and Uniqua were and movie thome said Uniqua was her own species, none other can be found on earth. I myself like Uniqua, but the others are not far behind. My wife likes both Pablo and Uniqua the best. It is a great show and I hope to Tivo all the episodes (we only have 4 so far).

  105. WE LOVE THE BACKYARDIGANS. I LOVE IT AS MUCH, IF NOT MORE THAT MY TWO KIDS. MY DAUGHTER’S FAVORITE IS PABLO(THE YETI STOMP SONG). I NEED TO GET TIVO SO WE CAN WATCH THE EPISODES OVER AND OVER. WE WATCH THE EPISODES ON COMCAST ONDEMAND AND EVERYTIME WE SEE THE YETI EPISODE WE SING THE SONG AND DANCE AROUND THE HOUSE. WHEN WE ARE IN THE CAR WE SING THE SONGS FROM THE SHOW, STOMP STOMP STOMP ON A YETI; STOMP STOMP STOMP GET READY. THIS IS THE BEST PROGRAM FOR ANYONE EVER. MY CHILDREN DON’T WATCH MUCH TV BECAUSE WE LIVE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE BEACH, BUT WHEN THEY DO IT IS ALWAYS BACKYARDIGANS. MY DAUGHTER WAS AFRAID OF GHOSTS UNTIL SHE SAW THE GHOST EPISODE AND FOUND A FUN WAY TO PLAY WITH THE HIDE AND GO BOO SONG. I’M GOING TO GO GET TIVO JUST TO RECORD THE BACKYARDIGANS. 108. You didn’t catch all the racist cracks?
So many stereotypes. Austin is a kangaroo, and white, so he can’t be in many episodes. And pablo is hispanic, which is why he was a yeti, and said to smell bad. The other three are black, which is why they are in almost every episode, Especially that acid trip uniqua. Lol. Its funny. I like tyrome, he always says something it certainly is, or it certainly was. His favorite words.

  109. Ok….Everyone here is your chance. The Backyardigans Songs are available on Winmx. I have converted everything over to mp3 so it should show up fine. You need to have winmx in order to download these songs. It is a free program for those of you who don’t know that. Just go to http://www.download.com and type in winmx in the search. Download and install and all that good stuff. Then just type in Backyardigans…and most probably will have to stand in line.

  112. WOW!!! This is one of the best shows that has ever been made for children and adults. It has swept across our college campus very very rapidly. Everyone relates to each one of the characters in way or another and sings the songs. My personal favorite is Tasha the Hippo because she is truly a reincarnation of me in cartoon form.

The BearShare program has the following Backyardigan songs to download.

I’M TARZAN, WHERE IN THE WORLD(my favorite), INTO THE THICK OF IT, A PIRATE SAYS ARRGH, YETI STOMP, SECRET AGENT, PLEASE & THANK YOU, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, and the THEME. I wish I could find THERES AN ECHO and ROW ROW ROW.

Uniqua’s voice in ‘Where in the world’ is sooo cute.

  114. Awesome Awesome Awesome!!! I love this show and I’m a 24 year-old with no kids. LOL but I work with kids everyday and find myself addicted to watching as much as I can of the Backyardigans on my lunch break. The creators are brilliant music-wise and I feel it is an ingenious way to introduce and educate children to the various genres of Music. Coming from an up-an-coming-artist who sings, plays several instruments and writes songs. This show is far beyond its league. Simple yet sweet, and clever yet clean in humor. ROCK ON BACKYARDIGANS!! I’ll be tivoing it more when the new episodes pop up.
As for lazytown? Its a lazy show, too weird and the puppets kinda freak me out.

  115. Geez, just to let you in on a little secret. I have the Nick Jr. saved in my “Favorites” folder just so I can get to the Backyardigans radio. Isn’t that sad? My son absolutely loves that show. I mean when he hears that theme song he lights up. He is only 1, but he knows when his show is on. He literally drops everything, and runs to the nearest tv. Its a hoot! I love the Scurvy Pirate song, and he loves that Pirats Says Arrrgghh!! We listen to that radio on there all the time. Good to see there are others than I!

    Keep watching

My daughter is 18 months and I don’t think she really enjoys the show as much as I do, but when a song starts she is up on her feet dancing. They have a CD out now that I want to get but it only has 5 songs. I can’t wait until they make a CD with all of the Backyardigan songs on it.

Used to have his “Selling water by the side of the river” cd, and was pleased to see his name in the credits. The characters are great, and I am glad that they are all of mixed ethnicities, it makes it that much more interesting.

We have been big Olie Polie fans for 5 years, and finding this has been a Godsend… and the jazz in Knights are Brave and Strong is fantastic. I have been thinking that I was the only adult who watched this and enjoyed it with my child, to find this blog has been a scream. Right on people!

Personally, I had no idea that animal species other than humans included sub races. All I know is that The Backyardigans are AWESOME. I came across the show while looking for Dora The Explorer and it was love at first sight. I put it on the next day for my 14 month old granddaughter and she immediately started to sway and turn around and dance to the music. Her favorite is Pablo and she recognizes what episode will be on as soon as the episode’s opening music comes on. She now asks for the ‘Boo’ or ‘Arrgh’ or ‘Stomp, Stomp, Stomp’ or ’swish, swish’ or ‘AwAwAwaaa’ show that we have DVR’d.
I do hope that this show continues to maintain its pure innocence and joy of music and dance. I love the way the value of kindness is taught without lecturing. Our children need to be allowed to soar with their imagination. Thank you for the Backyardigans.

  127. Hi, my husband and I have just discovered the Backyardigans show about a month ago and absolutely adore it…we have an almost 5 month old son who loves to watch it bouncing up and down in his jumperoo! The character are wonderful and the songs are so catchy we find ourselves singing them all day long and listening to Nick Jr. radio on the internet.

    Comment by Joan Behrens — February 11, 2005 @ 5:51 pm

  128. My son Lucas loves this show almost as much as I do. They seem to cover just about every genre of music out there (although the hip hop western Ridin The Range is a departure from my concept of “a western”, I still love it). I have captured all 9 episodes on my PC, and we watch them regularly. Here in the Great White North they’re on Treehouse TV on the weekends.

My son’s favorite episode changes from time to time, but mine is definitely Secret Mission (the first one I saw that got me completely hooked).

I have a DVD burner, and this show has motivated me to learn how to use it. I want to make a DVD of the show so we can take it everywhere we go. If this is illegal (even though its only for personal use), and any of you reading this are Mounties, please ignore that comment…

Long live the Backyardigans! Who do I email to beg for a second season?

  129. New father and mother..

Took the little precious to her first doctor visit - “Secret Agent” was on the tube in the lobby.

We have spent the last 5 days “sneaking” and “hiding” and singing around the house.

    Love that show.

  131. Well, I thought I was the only huge fan of the Backyardigans!! Apparently not!! It is by far THE best children’s show currently on tv. It is witty, entertaining and educational—my kids learn something from every episode. It is like musical theatre for kids—perfect. If this show doesn’t win an award then no other show should.
We need to petition Oprah to get the cast and animators on her show!!
Kudos to all involed in the creation.

  132. Everytime we go shopping, I tell my Mom to get me a “Backyardigans” game but we can never find anything. It’s my very, very favorite show.

  133. I was online looking for a webpage that showed who did the voices for the Backyardigans and found this website! After scanning all the comments, I didn’t see what I was looking for. I’m pretty sure Uniqua’s voice is done by the same girl who does Marcy and/or Mimi on Stanley (Disney Channel), but I don’t know about the others. I would love to see what these kids look like! They must do Broadway shows when they aren’t voicing cartoons!

  134. We all know how hard it is to get a 10 month old to sit still for one minute. Well thanks to this wonderful show, I have been blessed to have 30 minutes of freedom two times a day.My sons schedule actually revolves around that show.By the way all this time I was thinking Uniqua was an ant.But everyone has there own variation of what she is but one things for sure, she is adorable. When they say in the ending song that it’s time to have a snack, I have changed it so muy son thinks it’s time for his nap. It works great. We love all the episodes, our favorite is the yeti.Monday feb.21st there is a new episone coming on at 11am pac. time.I absolutly love this show. I am also looking for party decorations seeing that my boys birthday is coming up. I’ll try ebay as one person did suggest. Believe me, thanks to fans everywhere, this show will last and last and last!!!!!!!!!IT’S A YETTTTTTIIIIII!

All of a sudden this BEAUTIFUL song came on (Backyardigans theme song) and I was captivated! This is such a wonderful musical show. We are huge fans and hope to see many more seasons to come!

  139. I am so glad to see so many people other than myself liking this show. Besides the fact that it is very entertaining and appeals to adults, it is a quality show that little people really get into and learn. I think that is the most important point. I love the concept. The show is well thought out. Now having said all of that, where can I get the CD and DVD? My nephew loves the show and the music (at 39 so do I!).

  140. I was so sick and all I could do was heal by resting….well I ending up watching television much more than I normally do and I ended up discovering this show….my God, the cartoon is so cute….they are so brightly colored and so uplifting….eventually I had to go back to work, but I definately miss watching them…..

  141. My 13 month old hears the music and crawls as fast as she can for the living room ( and she is a very fast crawler!) She loves the theme song more than the rest I think, but she is always bobbing and dancing and gets very excited when it is on, it is her absolute favorite thing. ANd now my older kids ages 6,7,9 love it too, especially the spy one, and we all love to go around singing “a pirate, a pirate, a pirate says… ARGH!”

This music really is a pleasure to listen to..So let’s contact the people at Nick Jr, tell them we’re here searching for DVD’s,their music, and any other merchandise they’re willing to release!!! The producers need to know we’re out here so that they keep producing new shows and keep it going..I did..Go on–you sat long enough to read through these messages!!! You can go to http://www.nickjr.com if you like it that much!!! START WRITING!! I did.

  147. I agree. This is the best childrens show in a very long time. The hard part is I will be work during the day and my husband and daughter will call me and tell me that it is on and then they laugh. So I will sit on the phone just listening to the show. I have only seen a few of the shows. But it is like a mini broadway musical.

  148. I like to watch the Backyardigans with my kids. My 5-year old love to watch it because she loves to dance. According to the show, it seems like the producers are dancers and loves the old time dance moves like the twists. To me, it helps my children to appreciate all types of music and dances. I love to hear them sing. My 1-year old loves to watch it because she loves to hear them sing.

  152. I have a 7 month old daughter, and she’s been watching the backyardiagans since she was 3-4 months, I was flipping for children shows and the show was on, so we watched it, and she loves it and watched it ever since, so I know all the episodes (her favorite one is Pirate Treasure) Now that she can sit up, everytime they sing she bounces on her butt, and it’s just the cutest thing. I am waiting for birthday supplies to come out also because I want her first birthday party to be Backyardigan style because she just loves them (and they’ve grown on me too)

  153. I love the backyardigans music. My favorite is the mermaid lullaby, it is so sweet, I wish they had some songs on cd. This is the cutest show my two year old watches. Most of them I tolerate, but this one I actually love watching.

    Comment by Jeannette — February 17, 2005 @ 1:34 pm

  154. I cannot tell who likes the show more - me or my 3-yr-old son. His favorite passtime now is playing “Backyardigans” (I usually play the part of Pablo, and do my best to be neurotic and have an occassional meltdown). He would fit right in with the gang, as his imagination seems to know no bounds. What I like best about the show is that it encourages kids to use their imagination, which is widely recognized as a precursory step to development of the parts of the brain that are responsible for logical thought processes, and performing things like “what if” analyses. The most special aspect of this show is that we don’t have to encourage kids to watch it (and gain the inherent benefits in the process). Kids (of all ages) just seem to be drawn to this show.
This past weekend I was shocked to discover a new episode. I missed most of the “Castaways” episode because I thought I had them all recorded so I didn’t pay attention to when they were on cable anymore - I actually stumbled onto the new one by accident!! A quick check on the internet TV listings shows me that there’s another new one this weekend (”Superheros and Supervillains” or something like that). It’s good to see they’re making more episodes. I hope this show is around for a long long time. With the exception of “Castaways” I have every episode they’ve ever made on DVD, and I’ll add each new one as soon as it comes out. My son has come to expect it, and still doesn’t understand why daddy can’t show him the “Castaway one with Austin and his new song” any time he wants to see it…

  157. I am one of those moms who enjoy the Backyardigans as much if not more than, my 11-month old. I am planning her first birthday party in that theme and there is nothing manufactured yet. Howevever, if you go on the Nick Jr. Web site (I think the one for parents) it has some printables. I am going to get a sheet cake and have it decorated like the yard and add some little plastic houses from either a party or craft store. I am going to print out the characters on card stock and glue them to popsickle sticks or toothpicks and I have an instant Cake! I am also getting some iron-on transfers and printing out some pictures on that and ironing it onto white tablecloths from a Dollar store. I am going to use all different brightly colored plates and cups (the colors of the characters) and do the same with streamers. Go to the site and save as many of the pictures as you can and use them to enlarge them into other things. There are quite a few little things they have that you can be creative with (still not as many as other shows, though).

I also found a great gal who does custom party favors and baby showers. She is going to make lables for bubbles with my little girl’s name and use the backyardigans pictures (don’t tell Nick!!) She is very talented and has some great products. Email her at ohbaby@myacc.net and her name is Debby. I told her I’d post this so please contact her!!!

  160. We just discovered the Backyardigans. My four year old loves it, and his seven year old sister tolerates it. It’s now passed Blues Clues, Dora, and Stanley in his TIVO selection order.
My husband also loves the background music, but noted that they may change the music genre by episode. The Yeti episode was very jazz/funk fusion, while the Tarzan episode was classical/operatic. His he crazy or has anyone else noticed this?

I even have my 23 year old sister watching it too. We call each other whenever it is on, and neither of us have kids (just for our pleasure)! I am going to attempt to do a cake for her birthday free hand with different frosting colors, I don’t know if I am quite that artistic!! I wish they would put out more episodes… I love the ones that are available… and Chelsea now acts like a pirate ” Aargh” and sings “Stomp, Stomp, Stomp” , the latter being one of her first true words other than mom. Along with “Yeti Yeti Yeti!” Sounds cute from a kid who still has very few words you can understand!! Can’t wait to the new movie on Monday!!

I think also Uniqua is unique and not a ladybug and Austin is a kangaroo. I really think the dancing and singing is what get my kids going. 179. Backyardigans is the best show out right now, and I have wondered and wondered what Uniqua was, I thought she was an ant (never even thought of ladybug even though she has spots, duh) my kids thought she was an alien, but I found information on the show as to what they characters are:The five high-spirited stars include: Pablo, an energetic, enthusiastic and excitable penguin; Pablo’s best friend Tyrone, an easy-going, confident young moose; Uniqua, a one-of-a-kind character with an adventurous nature; Tasha, a deceptively sweet and girlish hippo; and Austin, a resourceful, but shy, kangaroo. rest of article here: http://news.awn.com/index.php?ltype=top&newsitem_no=12144

I watch my 4 year old nephew a couple days a week and he just loves to sit in my lap, rocking in the rocking chair, watching for hours! I turn on the “closed captioning” and I can’t help but sing along, I even sing when alone! Especially “Ridin the Range”, and “A Pirate Says… ARR!” :o)

We got hooked on the show, and on Tyrone, the hunky moose. We both are hoping he and Uniqua get together sometime soon.
