Not much happened today. Yesterday, however...
Last night, Len called out of the blue and wanted to know if he could give my name to a manager he knows. You're killing me, Len. Sure, yeah, okay, if you gotta. G'ahead. This manager is a guy who represents one or two of Len's students from previous years. His ambition is to take scripts and sell them, with himself attached as producer. That's how you get anywhere in this town--you get projects set up, with yourself as producer. Len's recommending me to someone. I am a happy camper. I know this is a far cry from the manager taking me on, or anything happening. But it meant a lot to get a phone call out of the blue.
Last night I also watched Event Horizon, written by a Stanford student. "Haunted house in space." But worse than that. The climax had lots of special effects and no soul. Compare this to the climax of Alien, another haunted house in space, where we are gripping the armrests wondering if Ripley's going to make a tasty midnight snack. In Event Horizon the climax involves waves of blood--didn't these guys ever watch Evil Dead II, the ultimate wave-of-blood movie?--and something obscure happening with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill. However, it's always good to know that writers from Stanford are working. I am very depressed. I've just discovered that the Stanford Writers' Round Table, put on by Stanford Alumni in Entertainment, is on the same day as the Silicon Valley Half Marathon. I am almost tempted to run (ha) straight from the marathon to the plane so I could get to the breakfast, but I have to be realistic.
What is Michael Madsen doing in this show Vengeance Unlimited? Several people told me that it was the best pilot they'd seen this season, but to me it's like fingernails on a chalkboard--and worse, it seems like something from the 80s (and I don't just mean The Equalizer). |
