Mac OS X Spam Filtering Help Needed

Jul 13

Mail.app (the mail application that comes with OS X) does a faboo job of filtering out spam and storing it in the Junk folder. Problem is, I’m still getting 300-400 spam messages a day (and rising). Sure, they’re mostly going into the Junk folder, but still.

So: any nominations for spam filtering software we can put on our OS X server?

Update: Oops! Darin says I totally have it wrong. What we need is help configuring our WebStar mail server so that it refuses most of the spam!

And no, we don’t want to switch software.

  1. No, this is not the answer you’re looking for, but here’s what I did:

got rid of the default domain email

took all references to my email address off all websites

made a new email address for myself, and only gave that to friends

made a contact form that, even when viewing the source, doesn’t contain my new email address

Works beautifully. I haven’t gotten *one* spam since. It’s interesting how much more likely I am to write email now that I don’t have to look at disgusting subject lines.

I know what you mean about the kids taking new technology for granted – my 4 year old was flummoxed when we couldn’t send Todd a picture of a heart via cellphone text messaging – he was like, well, you can do practically anything ELSE using a computer…

Alternatively, use an address from despammed.com. Seems very efficient. Only trouble is, your old addy remains on the spammers’ lists for ever and aye.

Yeah, just wait till somebody sends you and 50 other people an email and doesn’t use the BLIND Carbon Copy feature that was convenielntly invented… like a chain letter, bulletin, or the very crafty hoax. Then, you’re email is toast once again. So, what I do, is I create email aliases that forward my email to one master account. If I ever have to give my email to somebody I thought might give me spam trouble later on, or sell my email address, I create an alias pertinent to them.
